Chapter 56 - Jiangxi replies
Back in Zhejiang, Zhang Yi was helping the soldiers to accommodate three wood barrels, each one containing enough testing solution to perform five thousand tests. The barrels will be sent to Jiangsu, as Zhong Kunyi promised to Ouyang Ziyu:
-Put this one in the back. The solution can be shaken, but the barrels may break if the road is too rocky. Please take care.
Feng Long and Yu Lexuan are also nearby. Feng Long wrote a letter to Xia Chunyu and he expects it to arrive before the tests, as he will use a pigeon to send it.
It was also the first day Ding Qi allowed travelers to pass freely through Huangshan. As he expected, no cases were recorded in the morning. Zhang Xiaofan also shifted his priorities for testing and started to re-test people that received the medicines made by him and Zhang Yi. Most tests returned negative, showing that the disease was healed or greatly attenuated. He smiles:
-The results are promising, and both medicines worked!
He brings this information to Ding Qi, who celebrates:
-That's great, Zhang Xiaofan! Do you intend to deploy it immediately?
-Well, no. I'll test it a bit more, and I'll also take it to see if it is safe.
-Are you crazy? Isn't it dangerous?
-No, definitely. Also, I'd never give to our people something I can't take or that is dangerous.
-Well, I understand... If so, let me drink it as well...
-But, Majesty...
-The same rule applies to me. After all, I stand for Feng Long's "beauty of governance" teachings. - Ding Qi smiles.
-Well... If your majesty is willing to do so, I cannot stop you.
-I have everything to lose if we don't succeed. And I don't want to lose you.
Ding Qi briefly hugs Zhang Xiaofan:
-Let's have it. And see if we remain protected for a prolonged amount of time.
-As you majesty wishes...
Zhang Xiaofan brings the medicines, already mixed and ready to drink. Ding Qi drinks it first:
-I like the taste of it...
-Oh, your majesty. I included some flavor because the original taste was too acidic. Children will take it easier that way too.
-Good!
Feng Long frees the pigeon, carrying the letter to Xia Chunyu. Zhong Kunyi moves next to him, bowing:
-Good morning, Your Majesty.
-Oh, Zhong Kunyi, please rise...
Feng Long turns and helps Zhong Kunyi to rise:
-We are sending another batch of tests from what I'm seeing. When will Xia Chunyu pay for it?
-Well, he will pay when he receives it. - Feng Long smiles.
-I have some reservations about selling things that way, but as you said, you trust him.
-Exactly, even though... He already paid it in another way... - Feng Long blushes.
Zhong Kunyi smiles:
-Well, I hope they get there safely. It is going to take how long to arrive?
-I think about two days. They will cover most of the trip by boat and about 100 li on land.
-Excellent. Well, I'll move back to my room.
-Feel free.
The soldiers move the containers to the boat. Feng Long, Zhang Yi, and Yu Lexuan look at the boat moving away:
-Your majesty, do you think there will be many cases in Jiangsu? - Zhang Yi gets closer to Feng Long.
-I don't think so. Even though Xia Chunyi was not aware, his empire has very little trade with Anhui. There might be some cases, but their situation is certainly better than Huangshan.
-I was wondering about other empires, like Jiangxi. - Yu Lexuan smiles.
-Well, I expect Ding Qi to ask the emperor Meng Zhang about the status of the epidemic in his empire.
-Do you think Meng Zhang is aware? I think he had a serious problem with communication. - Zhang Yi replied.
-Yes, it happened when they tried to invade our empire, but I noticed that someone misled him. He issued a sincere apology after that, I noticed he was very worried about his people being murdered. It is important to notice how young Meng Zhang is, he is younger than Ding Qi, fortunately, his empire is mostly empty, most people live in an area that is comparable to Huangshan or a bit larger.
-Not counting that it is difficult to get to Nanchang... It took me over four days. - Yu Lexuan smiles.
-Exactly. This relative remoteness will probably have a positive effect on him, as the number of infected getting there will be much smaller than Huangshan.
A few hours later, the letter sent by Meng Zhang arrives at Huangshan. Ding Qi was alone when the pigeon landed on his window. He carefully takes the letter and the small container attached to it and moves out of the room, looking for Zhang Xiaofan. He finds him in his lab:
-Zhang Xiaofan, good news, Meng Zhang replied!
-Good, please your majesty, let us know!
Ding Qi opens the letter, and starts reading:
-"Your Majesty Ding Qi, I've read your request for partnership, and I fully agree with you on it, we will cooperate closely. If it helps you, I also sent a small sample of the medicine we are currently using, we are achieving good results with it. I need to tell your majesty that some compounds used in this medicine can only be found in Jiangxi. You need to give it to three different people, just one time, and wait two days. Our research has shown that 2 on 3 will recover within this window. That said, I wish your majesty a perfect day. Sincerely, Meng Zhang, emperor of Jiangxi".
-This is nice, he sent the medicine he is using! It will allow me to do a benchmark against our formulae. -Zhang Xiaofan smiles.
-You are right. I'm happy he accepted my request, now we have more resources than ever to fight this disease properly.
-Even though Hefei will keep sending us this disease...
-Yes, but everything has an upside. Eventually, everyone will be infected in that city, and maybe it may stop naturally.
-Or it may get worse... A disease must not be allowed to spread so much. The more it spreads, the more likely it will get worse.
-Well, Hefei is probably drowned on it. There's nothing we can do, we can only count on our friends in neighboring empires.
-Majesty, I'll move to the quarantine center to test Jiangxi's medicine immediately. Please, go after me if you need me.
-No problem, please get it done as Meng Zhang said.
Zhang Xiaofan bows to Ding Qi, moving away. Ding Qi sits on his throne, and smiles:
-Everything seems to be working great for us... I fear that Bai Chongye may not be that happy. - He thinks.
